Picture the gate of a large factory at 6 a.m. A guard is checking a truck. Behind him, a supervisor is checking the roster, the radio and the guard himself. That second job is the one many ex-Agniveers aim for. The security ladder has four steps: guard, supervisor, officer and manager. This guide explains the security supervisor step, because it is the one with a clear official course.

How the ladder works

Private security runs under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005, called PSARA. A new guard needs 100 hours of classroom training and 60 hours in the field. Ex-servicemen need a shorter course of 40 and 16 hours. The Ministry of Home Affairs lists both in its order on training institutes.

A supervisor leads a group of guards. The model rules say there should generally be one supervisor for every 15 guards, though the number can change when guards work at many sites. Above the supervisor sits the security officer, and then the manager. Our guide on security and facility jobs shows how these roles fit together.

What the law gives you

The PSARA Act tells agencies to give preference to certain people when they hire a security supervisor. The person must have served at least three years in the Army, Navy, Air Force, other Union armed forces, State Police or Home Guards. That is Section 9(5) of the Act. For guards, the Act allows preference to people from these forces under Section 10(3). A completed Agniveer term is four years, so it clears the three-year mark. The Act does not name Agniveers one by one, so ask the agency how it counts your service. Some older articles call this “Section 6”, which is wrong. Section 6 lists who cannot get an agency license.

The official security supervisor course

The security supervisor course is a short-term certificate from the Management and Entrepreneurship and Professional Skills Council (MEPSC). The official qualification file was approved on 8 May 2025. Here are the main facts.

ItemWhat the file says
LevelNSQF level 4.5, certificate
Training hours154 theory, 236 practical and 60 on-the-job, a total of 450 (the file shows 480 in one place)
Unit sizeA supervisor manages 6 to 15 guards
Minimum age22 years
Pass mark70 percent overall
Next stepSecurity Officer

The course covers guarding duties, supervising a unit, handling emergencies, front office and key control, lost property, staff welfare, first aid, fire safety and communication. It adds 60 hours of employability skills, including basic English.

Who can join

The file names ex-servicemen, and it names Agniveers in brackets. It lists these entry routes.

  • Class 12 pass with 3 years of experience in man guarding or in the armed or para-military forces.
  • Class 10 pass with 5 years of the same experience.
  • An earlier NSQF level 3 qualification with 5 years, or level 4 with 4 years.

Our reading is that a four-year Agniveer term fits the Class 12 route, but not the Class 10 route, which asks for five years. Ask the training partner to confirm this in writing. The file also repeats the physical standards in PSARA. For guards, these include a height of 160 cm for men and 150 cm for women, with a 5 cm relaxation for some groups, and a one-kilometre run in 6 minutes for ages 18 to 30.

Officer and manager steps

The file names Security Officer as the next step after a supervisor. We did not find an official course file for it, so we cannot say how long it takes or what it costs. Ask MEPSC or a training partner. The manager step usually needs more years of experience and a degree is often useful. See our guide on regular graduation after Agniveer if you want to study while you work.

Why a security supervisor job suits you

A supervisor does not only watch a gate. He plans the roster, checks the guards, writes the shift report and handles a problem before it grows. These are things a unit in service does every day. You know how to give a clear order and how to stay calm when a plan fails. A civil guard may never have learned this. That is why agencies look for people with service backgrounds to fill supervisor posts.

Still, treat the course as a real step. The file asks you to learn reports, key control and visitor records. It also asks for basic computer use, and some sites use digital patrol tools. Practise on a computer before the course starts.

Fees and pay

We found no official fee or salary table for these courses. Many websites quote figures, but they come from institutes and job sites, not from the council. Fees differ by training partner, so ask for a written quote. Before you take a job, ask for the basic pay, allowances, shift rules, overtime and insurance in writing.

How to start

  1. Collect your discharge papers, Skill Certificate and Class 10 or 12 papers.
  2. Check which entry route fits you.
  3. Find a training partner for the security supervisor qualification. Ask whether it is linked to MEPSC.
  4. Ask what the fee covers, who holds the exam and where it is held.
  5. Keep your medical fitness proof ready.
  6. After the certificate, apply to licensed agencies. Ask each one about its PSARA license.

If you plan to own an agency later, read our PSARA license guide. First aid and fire safety also help a lot, so look at the guides on first aid and CPR and on fire and industrial safety.
