You liked the idea of a railway uniform. Then you heard two numbers: 10 per cent and 50 per cent. Which one belongs to the RPF Agniveer reservation? Here is the answer, with the dates, so you do not plan around the wrong figure.

The RPF Agniveer reservation: 10 per cent, not 50

In July 2024, the Director General of the Railway Protection Force said that all recruitment for the constable post in RPF would carry a 10 per cent reservation for ex-Agniveers. He also spoke of age relaxation and an exemption from the physical efficiency test (All India Radio reports of 12 and 24 July 2024). That is the last RPF-specific statement I could find.

Now the 50 per cent. On 21 July 2026, the Home Ministry told Parliament that central armed police forces and Assam Rifles reserve 50 per cent of Constable (GD) and Rifleman posts for ex-Agniveers (PIB release). The RPF is run by the Railways. It is not listed among those forces in that reply. I found no notice that raises the RPF Agniveer reservation above 10 per cent. Treat 10 per cent as the figure until a Railways notice says otherwise.

The wider Railways quota

On 26 February 2026, Indian Railways and the Indian Army launched a Framework of Cooperation. It provides 5 per cent reservation for ex-Agniveers in Level-2 and above posts, and 10 per cent in Level-1 posts. It also gives ex-servicemen 10 per cent and 20 per cent in the same levels (PIB release).

This is separate from the RPF Agniveer reservation. It covers regular railway jobs such as Pointsman or Track Maintainer. It does not cover the RPF security force. Do not mix the two when you read a notice.

Pay, age and exam stages in the last RPF round

The last full round I could verify was CEN RPF 02/2024. The official notice gave these details for Constable (Executive):

– 4,208 posts.

  • Pay Level 3, with basic pay of Rs. 21,700.
  • Age 18 to 28 years as on 1 July 2024.
  • Class 10 pass as the minimum qualification.
  • A computer based test first.
  • Then a physical efficiency test (PET) and a physical measurement test (PMT).
  • Document verification for those who qualify.

An older version of this article said the age limit was 18 to 25 years. That was wrong for this notice. The official notice says 18 to 28. Your age relaxation as an ex-Agniveer is extra. The notice also says ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET but must still do the PMT. That rule is for ex-servicemen, not for Agniveers. The RPF Director General spoke of a PET exemption for ex-Agniveers, so look for it in the next notice.

Is a new RPF round coming?

Earlier versions of this article said a round of over 8,000 posts was expected. I could not confirm that figure from any official source. As of late September 2026, a recruitment site reported that no new RPF Constable notice had been released. Only the notice itself can tell you the number of posts. So plan, but do not count on any figure until it is published.

Real-life example: choosing between three railway routes

Take Ravi, who leaves service at 22 with a Class 10 pass. He can try the RPF Constable post. He can try a Level-1 railway job, which has its own 10 per cent share. Or he can aim for a central armed police force, where the share is 50 per cent. Each route has a different exam, a different uniform and a different life.

The RPF job suits someone who wants to work on the railway network and in railway security. The Level-1 job is more of a technical and maintenance career. The central forces suit someone who is ready to be posted far from home. Ravi can apply to more than one. The RPF Agniveer reservation does not stop him from trying the others.

How to prepare for the RPF Agniveer reservation

  1. Check the Railway Recruitment Board portal for new Centralised Employment Notices.
  2. When a notice appears, search it for the words “Ex-Agniveer”.
  3. Read the age limit, the PET rule and the reserved share for your group.
  4. Keep your discharge certificate and service record ready.
  5. Choose the right group on the form, as ex-Agniveer.

Keep your fitness up, even if the PET is waived. Training later with the force will be hard if you let it slide. Study basic arithmetic, reasoning and general awareness for the computer test, in case the notice does not waive it for you.

Your first posting can be anywhere on the railway network. That is normal for a central force. Plan your family life with that in mind. Also compare the RPF Agniveer reservation with the 50 per cent central route in our CAPF reservation guide, and with the RRB Group D and NTPC guide for regular railway jobs.

In short, the RPF Agniveer reservation is a real but smaller share. Use it as one option among several, and always let the live notice decide.
