If you served in the Navy or on the technical side, the Coast Guard may feel like a natural next step. It guards the same seas. But how real is the Coast Guard Agniveer reservation? It is 10%, announced in 2022, and the entry rules were written for much younger candidates. Here is what that means for you.

The reservation and its limits

On 18 June 2022 the Defence Minister approved 10% of Ministry of Defence vacancies for Agniveers. The Tribune report says this covers the Indian Coast Guard, defence civilian posts and the 16 DPSUs. We found no later increase as of October 2026. The 50% quota is for CAPF and Assam Rifles constable posts, not the Coast Guard.

One practical catch matters most. Navik (General Duty) has an age limit of 18 to 22 years. Ex-Agniveers finish service at around 22 or older. Unless a notice gives ex-Agniveers an age relaxation, many of you may be too old. Read the age section of each notice first.

These details come from the June 2025 notice for the 01/2026 and 02/2026 batches. Rules can change in each notice.

Vacancies and exam

The Coast Guard holds two recruitment batches a year. The June 2025 notice announced 630 posts across Navik (GD), Navik (Domestic Branch) and Yantrik. Numbers change in every cycle. Selection runs through the Coast Guard Enrolled Personnel Test (CGEPT) in four stages: a computer-based exam, a physical fitness test, document checks and a medical exam.

  • The Navik (GD) paper has a second section on Class 12 level Maths and Physics.
  • Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks, as reported. Skipped questions carry no penalty.
  • Do not assume ex-Agniveers skip any stage unless the notice says so.

Navik (GD) or Yantrik?

If your service trade was technical, Yantrik may suit you better. It starts at Pay Level 5, with basic pay of Rs. 29,200 and a separate Yantrik pay of Rs. 6,200. It needs a relevant diploma. Read our guide to ITI and polytechnic options if you need one.

Where a Navik can go

A Navik can rise through the ranks. Reports say the top rank on this path, Pradhan Adhikari, is at Pay Level 8 with basic pay of Rs. 47,600. Promotion needs years of service and passing internal tests.

How to apply

  1. Watch the official Coast Guard recruitment portal for the next notice.
  2. Read the age section and look for an Ex-Agniveer line.
  3. Check the zone-wise vacancy list, since vacancies are split by region.
  4. Keep your certificates scanned, including Class 12 and your discharge papers.
  5. Apply online and pay the fee.

Is the Coast Guard Agniveer reservation right for you?

The Coast Guard Agniveer reservation is a real benefit, but it works best for a narrow group: candidates whose age and qualification match the notice. The most useful question is not how much the quota is, but whether you will still be inside the age limit when a notice opens.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the age limit. Navik (GD) is 18 to 22 years in the notice we checked.
  • Mixing up Navik (GD) and Yantrik. They need different qualifications.
  • Forgetting the Maths and Physics requirement for Navik (GD).
  • Using the 2022 announcement as proof of a seat. It is a share, and it must appear in a notice.
  • Missing the region-wise vacancy list.

Questions to ask before you apply

  1. Am I within the age limit in the notice?
  2. Did I study Maths and Physics in Class 12?
  3. Is my diploma or ITI trade accepted for Yantrik?
  4. Can I accept sea duty and long postings?

If the answers are no, other options may fit better. The DPSU Agniveer reservation also carries a 10% share and may suit technical trades. Also compare the CAPF 50% quota, which gives ex-Agniveers age relief.

Prepare while you wait

Study Class 12 Maths and Physics now. Practise fitness for the physical test, which includes running and exercises. Keep copies of your Class 12 marksheet and discharge papers ready. When the next Coast Guard Agniveer reservation notice opens, you will be able to act at once.

A short example

Take Sameer, who finished service at 22 and has a Class 12 certificate with Maths and Physics. He checks the Coast Guard notice for age relaxation, sees that he is inside the limit and applies. Another candidate, Imran, is 24 and finds that the age limit has passed, so he turns to the CAPF route instead. The Coast Guard Agniveer reservation helps only those who meet the notice rules, so read them first.

Key points on the Coast Guard Agniveer reservation

  • The share is 10% and was announced in June 2022.
  • Navik (GD) is for Class 12 candidates with Maths and Physics, aged 18 to 22 in the notice we checked.
  • Yantrik starts at a higher pay level than Navik.
  • Notices come twice a year.

Do not pay anyone who promises a Coast Guard seat. The official notice and portal are free to read, and fees go only through the portal.

In short, the Coast Guard Agniveer reservation is a 10% share from 2022, and the Navik age limit is the main hurdle. Read the age line first, then decide how the Coast Guard Agniveer reservation fits your plan.
