A friend tells you, ‘Just use the defence quota and get into a National Law University (NLU).’ It sounds simple. For most ex-Agniveers it is also wrong. CLAT is the Common Law Admission Test. This guide explains CLAT after Agniveer: who can sit the test, what the defence quota really covers and when another route makes more sense.

The defence quota is for wards, not for you

Some NLUs reserve seats for wards of serving or retired defence personnel. The Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU) in Shimla, for example, lists a 5% share under this heading. The word ‘wards’ means children. So the quota helps the child of a soldier. It does not help a soldier who wants to study law.

Agniveers also do not get ex-servicemen status when they leave after four years. The Navy’s published terms say so plainly. That is one more reason not to count on an ex-servicemen seat. If your own parent served, ask each NLU whether you count as a ward. Every NLU writes its own rule.

Who can sit CLAT after Agniveer

  • You need a Class 12 or equivalent pass with 45% marks, or 40% for SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe) and PwD (persons with disabilities) candidates.
  • There is no upper age limit for the undergraduate test, says the Consortium of NLUs.
  • Students still in Class 12 can apply, but they must show proof of passing at admission.
  • You apply as a General or category candidate. No defence category applies to you.

If you joined after Class 10, you need a Class 12 pass first. Check that your Class 12 route counts as equivalent before you apply.

Dates every CLAT after Agniveer plan needs

CLAT 2027 is on Sunday, 6 December 2026, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Applications opened on 3 August 2026 and close on 31 October 2026. That leaves about four weeks from today.

If your service ends in 2027, you will probably miss this round. Plan for the next one. The notice came out in July in both 2025 and 2026, so watch the Consortium’s website from June.

What the test covers

  • English language
  • Current affairs, including general knowledge
  • Legal reasoning
  • Logical reasoning
  • Quantitative techniques

The paper runs for two hours. Reading skill matters most, because passages are long. Start now with a daily newspaper and short legal passages. Check the official notice for the exact question count and marking.

How seats are shared among NLUs

The Consortium of NLUs runs CLAT. It has 26 member universities. Many keep seats for students of their own state. Some keep seats for women, persons with disabilities and other groups. Read each NLU’s seat matrix before you fill your preference list. NLU Delhi is not on the Consortium’s member list. It runs its own test, the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET).

Is the five-year route realistic for you?

Yes, if you want to start law at once and you hold a Class 12 pass. You will sit beside classmates who are several years younger. Some ex-Agniveers like that. Others prefer a faster path: finish any degree, then join a three-year LLB. Entry tests for that route vary by university. Our guide to the LLB law degree pathway explains it.

A realistic picture of CLAT after Agniveer

Imagine Karan, who joined at 18 and leaves at 22. He wants law, but he has been away from textbooks for four years. CLAT after Agniveer is possible for him, because the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) has no upper age limit for the undergraduate test. The hard part is not the rule. The hard part is the reading speed and the competition for each NLU seat.

Be honest about your time. A strong score needs months of steady reading, not weeks. If you cannot study for that long while you work, the graduate route may suit you better.

Money and time check for CLAT after Agniveer

  • The five-year course keeps you in college for five years before you earn a law degree.
  • NLU fees vary by university and year, so read each fee page.
  • Loans and scholarships exist, but check each university’s own list.
  • Your service fund may help, but plan its use with care.

Compare this cost with the three-year graduate route. A graduate can start law three years after the first degree. The total time can be similar, and some people find it easier on the budget.

Who should think twice

If you want a government job soon, a long law course delays your first salary. If you love reading and argument, the delay may be worth it. Think about which matters more to you.

Keep CLAT after Agniveer in perspective

Many people treat CLAT after Agniveer as the only way into law. It is not. It is one route, and it suits young candidates with strong reading skills and time to prepare. Others reach the same bar through a degree and a three-year LLB. Neither route is better for everyone. Pick the one that fits your age, your budget and your patience. Whichever you choose, start by reading the official notice yourself rather than trusting a forwarded message.

Steps to start

  1. Confirm your Class 12 route and marks.
  2. Read the official CLAT 2027 press release.
  3. Choose your target NLUs and read each seat matrix.
  4. Build a daily reading habit.
  5. Note the month the next CLAT notice is due, and set a reminder.
