Picture a young man from Itanagar who served four years in uniform. He wants to wear a uniform in his own state. In July 2026 his state gave him a new reason to hope. Here is what the Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation says, which posts it covers, and what you should check before you apply for a job under the Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation.
The Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation: 20% of posts
The State Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, met on Friday 17 July 2026. As the Arunachal Observer reports, it approved a 20% reservation of posts for retired Agniveers from Arunachal Pradesh. Some reports give the date as 18 July, which is probably the date of publication. The reservation is for constabulary and equivalent posts, and it applies against vacancies.
This builds on an earlier promise. In July 2024 the Chief Minister said that retired Agniveers from the state would get preference in police, battalion and fire services, as reported by PTI. The 2026 decision turned that promise into a fixed share.
Posts covered by the Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation
| Department or post | Covered |
| Arunachal Police | Yes |
| Arunachal Armed Police Battalion | Yes |
| Indian Reserve Battalion | Yes |
| Fire and Emergency Services | Yes |
| Mineral Guards | Yes |
| Forest Guards | Yes |
| Special Tiger Protection Force | Yes |
| Forester | Yes |
| Prison Warden | Yes |
That is nine posts or departments. Many states name only police posts, so this list is wider than usual. The reservation is for constable-level and similar posts, so check each post’s rules.
What if the quota is not filled?
The Cabinet also gave a clear rule for empty seats. If not enough candidates qualify under the ex-Agniveer quota in the selection exam, the remaining posts go to candidates under the normal APST quota. APST stands for Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe. This way the posts do not stay vacant. The release is covered here.
Who can use the Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation
The Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation is for retired Agniveers from Arunachal Pradesh. You will likely need proof of state origin. Your recruitment notice will say what that proof is. Do not guess. Read the notice for the post you want.
- You should have completed your Agniveer engagement.
- You should be from Arunachal Pradesh, as the decision says.
- You must meet the post’s other rules, such as education and physical standards, unless the notice says otherwise.
- You must apply in the window given in the notice.
Papers you may need
Each notice lists its own papers. Be ready with your discharge certificate, service record, proof that you belong to the state, ID and education certificates. Ask your unit for written copies of your service papers before you leave. Keep scans on your phone and a printed set at home.
What the Arunachal Pradesh Agniveer reservation does not yet say
The Cabinet approved the reservation. The next steps are the recruitment rule changes and each department’s notice. Those details, such as age relaxation, test exemptions and how many posts, will come from those notices. Do not rely on pay or allowance figures you see online unless they come from the notice itself. Many websites guess these numbers, and a wrong figure can mislead you when you plan your next step.
What the 20% means in numbers
A reservation of 20% sets aside one post in every five. If a department has 100 constable vacancies in a recruitment, then 20 are kept for retired Agniveers from the state, as long as enough candidates qualify. If not enough qualify, the remaining posts go to the APST quota, as the Cabinet explained.
How other states compare
Arunachal is not the only state with a 20% share. The Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved 20% for police and PAC in June 2025, as reported by All India Radio. Delhi Police also set 20% for constable (executive) posts in a notification reported in March 2026. What sets Arunachal apart is the long list of nine posts and the clear APST fallback rule.
How to follow it step by step
