You see a government job notice. It offers age relaxation for “Ex-Servicemen”. You served four years as an Agniveer, so you assume it applies. It may not. This is one of the most common mistakes. Here is how Agniveer age relaxation in government exams really works, and how to check a notice in two minutes. Getting Agniveer age relaxation right can save you a wasted application.

Ex-Servicemen and Ex-Agniveers are not the same

The Indian Navy’s published terms say Agniveers will not be eligible for Ex-Servicemen status. The Navy terms state this clearly. The Air Force terms say that after discharge Agniveers are not eligible for Ex-Servicemen status, ECHS or CSD. So the age relaxation written for Ex-Servicemen does not automatically cover you. Agniveer age relaxation applies only if a notice names Ex-Agniveers.

Where Agniveer age relaxation is confirmed

Several decisions create a separate Ex-Agniveer category. Here is what is confirmed in public announcements. Always read the live notice for exact figures.

AreaWhat was announcedAge relief
CAPF Constable (GD) and Assam Rifles Rifleman50% of vacancies (July 2026)3 years, first batch 5 years
BSF Constable50% (Dec 2025, from 10%)3 years, first batch 5 years
Indian Coast Guard, defence civilian posts, 16 DPSUs10% (Ministry of Defence, 2022)Age relaxation to be provided in the rules
Indian Railways, direct recruitment10% for Level 1, 5% for Level 2 and above, as reportedReported 3 years, first batch 5 years

The Ministry of Defence decision is in a PIB release. The Railways details come from a press report, so confirm them in the Railway Recruitment Board notice for your post. For the CAPF details, see our guide on age relaxation and physical test concessions in CAPF recruitment.

Where Agniveer age relaxation is not confirmed

For many large exams, public notices do not list an Ex-Agniveer age relaxation. This includes SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, IBPS bank exams, insurance exams such as LIC and NIACL, and most State PSC exams. This does not mean Agniveer age relaxation can never be added. Rules change. It means you should apply as a normal candidate unless the notice says otherwise, and keep an eye on new orders from the Ministry or the exam body. States run their own rules for police and other posts, so check each state’s order.

How to check Agniveer age relaxation in any notice

  1. Download the official notification PDF of the exam.
  2. Search the file for the words Ex-Agniveer and Agniveer.
  3. If you find them, read the age limit, the batch rule and the conditions.
  4. If you find only Ex-Servicemen, do not assume the same relief applies to you.
  5. Write to the conducting body and ask in writing.

Why the confusion happens

Many websites and coaching pages use Ex-Servicemen and Ex-Agniveer as if they meant the same thing. They do not. Ex-Servicemen status comes from government rules about former members of the armed forces. The services’ own terms say Agniveers do not get it. So the benefits meant for Ex-Servicemen need a separate decision for Agniveers.

What to do if Agniveer age relaxation is unclear

Email or call the helpline of the body that runs the exam. Quote your discharge date and ask a direct question: is Ex-Agniveer a recognised category in this cycle, and what age relaxation applies? A written reply is better than a coaching page. Keep the reply with your papers.

Two quick examples

Example one: a notice says 10 years relaxation for Ex-Servicemen but never mentions Ex-Agniveers. You should apply as a normal candidate, because Agniveer age relaxation is not written there. Example two: a CAPF Constable (GD) notice lists an Ex-Agniveer category with 3 years of relief, and 5 years for the first batch. Here the relief clearly applies, so you can plan on it.

Keep a printout of the page of the notice that shows your category, along with the date of the notice and the exam name. If a form asks you to pick a category, choose Ex-Agniveer only when the notice has one. A wrong category can lead to rejection later.

The same caution outside exams

Some state welfare schemes and private jobs also use the word Ex-Servicemen. Ask them whether Ex-Agniveer counts under their rule. Do not assume. Agniveer age relaxation, like any rule, is only as good as the written order behind it.

For the reservation side of railway jobs, read Railway Protection Force reservation for Agniveers. For defence jobs, read Defence PSU and MoD civilian post reservation.
