Two ex-Agniveers apply for the same CAPF constable post. One reads only the old 10% rules. The other reads the July 2026 update. The second one knows the age limit, the test exemptions and the quota. This guide gives you those numbers, so you can be the second one. It covers CAPF age relaxation for ex-Agniveers as announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

What changed in 2026

In July 2026, MHA told the Lok Sabha that a separate Ex-Agniveer category now exists. It covers Constable (General Duty) posts in the Central Armed Police Forces and Rifleman posts in Assam Rifles. Fifty per cent of vacancies are reserved. A report on the announcement also lists the age and test relief described below. Earlier, the quota was 10%.

The new rules are being notified force by force. MHA notified the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) rules in July 2026, as reported by ANI. Reports say the SSB rules keep 50% of Constable (GD) vacancies for ex-Agniveers every recruitment year. BSF made the change earlier, in December 2025, as reported by All India Radio, raising its quota from 10% to 50%.

CAPF age relaxation: the exact numbers

The CAPF age relaxation is on top of the normal upper age limit. The standard SSC Constable (GD) limit is 18 to 23 years.

WhoExtra yearsUpper age limit on the standard 23
Most ex-Agniveers3 years26 years
First Agniveer batch5 years28 years

The first batch has not completed its term yet as of the July 2026 statements, so the CAPF age relaxation of 5 years has not been used in a full hiring cycle. So check your force’s live notice before you apply. Age is counted on the date given in that notice.

Tests you skip along with the CAPF age relaxation

Reports on the July 2026 announcement say eligible ex-Agniveers are exempt from three stages that other candidates must clear:

  • Written examination (computer-based test)
  • Physical Standard Test (PST), which checks height and chest
  • Physical Efficiency Test (PET), the running test

For other candidates the PET is a 5 km run in 24 minutes for men and a 1.6 km run in 8.5 minutes for women, outside Ladakh. The SSB notification says the exemptions are subject to the conditions in the rules. So the next stage for you is likely the medical test and document check. Confirm this in each force’s own notice.

Why the CAPF age relaxation and exemptions matter

The SSC GD written test has 80 questions for 160 marks. For some 2024 lists, the final cut-off for male candidates went above 150 marks, as shown in the SSC final result write-up. Cut-offs vary by force, state and category. Skipping both the written test and the running test removes the two stages where many candidates drop out.

Not every force has updated at the same speed

BSF and SSB have notified their rules. Others are following. If a force’s notice still lists the old 10% quota with a PET, it may not have updated yet. Do not assume the old rules apply to you. Write to that force’s recruitment cell, or watch for an amended notice. MHA has also set up a dedicated ex-Agniveer wing to coordinate your next steps, as the minister mentioned in his reply.

Two quick examples

Example one: a candidate is 25 years old on the date given in the notice. The standard limit is 23 and the CAPF age relaxation for most ex-Agniveers is 3 years, so the limit is 26. This candidate is within it. Example two: a candidate is 27 on that date. The limit of 26 is crossed, so only a first-batch ex-Agniveer, with 5 years of relief and a limit of 28, can apply. Reserved-category relaxations may add to these figures only if the notice says so.

The quota works in a similar simple way. If a force fills 1,000 constable vacancies in a year, then 50% means 500 are kept for ex-Agniveers. The SSB rules say this share applies in every recruitment year.

Papers to keep ready

Each notice lists its own documents. Be ready with your discharge certificate, service record and ID. Ask your unit for written copies before you leave so you do not have to chase them later.

A simple checklist before you use the CAPF age relaxation

  1. Open the force’s latest recruitment notice.
  2. Look for the words Ex-Agniveer and 50%.
  3. Check the age limit, the CAPF age relaxation clause and the date age is counted on.
  4. Check which tests you are exempt from.
  5. Keep your service papers ready and note the last date.
