Four years in uniform, and one number everyone quotes: Rs 11.71 lakh. But where does that number come from? And is it what lands in your account? Here is the full Seva Nidhi corpus breakdown, year by year. The Seva Nidhi corpus is the money that builds up in your Agniveer Corpus Fund, and the figures below come from the official PIB release on the Agnipath Scheme.
How the Seva Nidhi corpus is built
Every month, 30% of your monthly package goes into the Agniveer Corpus Fund. The government puts in the same amount. You take home the other 70%. Both shares grow with each pay rise, so the amounts change every year.
| Year | Monthly package | In hand (70%) | Your 30% | Government |
| 1st year | Rs 30,000 | Rs 21,000 | Rs 9,000 | Rs 9,000 |
| 2nd year | Rs 33,000 | Rs 23,100 | Rs 9,900 | Rs 9,900 |
| 3rd year | Rs 36,500 | Rs 25,580 | Rs 10,950 | Rs 10,950 |
| 4th year | Rs 40,000 | Rs 28,000 | Rs 12,000 | Rs 12,000 |
Over four years your own share of the Seva Nidhi corpus adds up to about Rs 5.02 lakh. The government adds about Rs 5.02 lakh. That makes roughly Rs 10.04 lakh before interest.
What the Seva Nidhi corpus pays out
The release says the final Seva Nidhi corpus payout is about Rs 11.71 lakh. This includes interest at the applicable rates. It is paid as a one-time package at the end of four years. The release also states that the Seva Nidhi is exempt from income tax. Note the word “about”. The final figure can differ because interest depends on the rates in force.
| Part | Amount (about) |
| Your contribution over four years | Rs 5.02 lakh |
| Government contribution | Rs 5.02 lakh |
| Total before interest | Rs 10.04 lakh |
| Seva Nidhi with interest | Rs 11.71 lakh |
Cover during service
The Seva Nidhi corpus is paid at exit. During service there is separate cover for risk. As reported by the Tribune from an Army statement, a family receives a non-contributory insurance sum of Rs 48 lakh in a battle casualty. They also get an ex-gratia of Rs 44 lakh, the Seva Nidhi with the government match and interest, and pay for the rest of the four-year term.
- Death attributable to service: insurance of Rs 48 lakh plus ex-gratia of Rs 44 lakh.
- Seva Nidhi corpus: your 30%, the equal government share, and interest.
- Pay for the balance of the four-year term, as stated in the Army clarification.
- Disability: the scheme sets a one-time ex-gratia of Rs 44, 25 or 15 lakh for 100%, 75% or 50% disability, based on the medical assessment.
These rules cover death and disability cases, and the exact payout depends on how the case is classified. Your unit will explain the exact terms.
Can you leave early?
The Indian Navy’s notification says Agniveers are not permitted to be released at their own request before completing the engagement. So plan for the full four years. Always read the terms of your own service, because they can differ by force. You can see the Navy’s published terms on the Join Indian Navy website.
What if you are selected for the regular cadre?
The official terms say that up to 25% of each batch can be enrolled in the regular cadre, based on performance and the needs of the service. Those who are chosen serve a longer engagement and follow the terms of regular soldiers. You can read the same rule in the Air Force terms and conditions, which say 20 years of further engagement for Air Force. Proposals to change the 25% figure have been discussed in the news, but check the current notification before you rely on any new number.
How this compares with a pension
A regular soldier who completes a full career gets a monthly pension for life. An Agniveer who leaves after four years gets no pension and no gratuity. Instead, you receive the Seva Nidhi corpus as a lump sum. A lump sum feels large but must last through exams, courses and job hunting. That is why a plan matters. Start with a Seva Nidhi emergency fund and then decide how to use the rest.
After the payout
Once the Seva Nidhi corpus arrives, avoid rushed decisions. Read how the payout is treated for tax in Seva Nidhi tax treatment. Then choose where to keep it using how to invest Seva Nidhi.
