You finish service and you hold a degree. Now you wonder what comes next. Law is one option that does not make you restart from Class 12. LLB after Agniveer works through the three-year Bachelor of Laws course for graduates. This guide covers who can join, what to check and what the career ladder really looks like.

Two routes into law

The Bar Council of India (BCI) recognises two kinds of law degree. One is a five-year integrated course after Class 12. The other is a three-year course that you take after a bachelor’s degree in any subject. The second route is the one that fits you if you finish a degree first.

Who can join LLB after Agniveer

  • You need a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognised university.
  • The BCI Rules set 45% as the minimum for general candidates and 40% for SC and ST (Scheduled Castes and Tribes). The BCI committee in 2017 also listed 42% for OBC (Other Backward Classes).
  • Universities may ask for more, so read each prospectus.
  • Some universities let final-year students apply provisionally. Check yours.
  • The BCI lists no age limit for LLB courses.

The age point needs care. The 2008 Rules once printed age caps. The BCI website says its later circular was nullified by a Supreme Court order of 3 March 2017. Some older prospectuses may still repeat the caps, so read the current one.

Does an open university degree count?

The BCI Rules accept a graduation earned through distance study, if you had the basic entry qualification for it. An IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) Agniveer degree needs Class 12, so it should qualify. Confirm with your law university, because it may have its own rule. Our guide on choosing the right stream helps you pick a first degree.

One more rule matters. The BCI does not let you join a regular law course while you study another regular degree. Short certificate courses and distance courses are the exceptions.

Entrance tests and fees

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) UG is mainly for the five-year course. Most three-year LLB seats use other tests. Delhi University runs its own entrance, and Maharashtra runs MH CET Law for the three-year course. Check the test for each university you like.

The course takes three years. Fees range widely between government and private colleges. We do not quote an average, because it would mislead you. Ask each college for a written fee list.

After the degree

Once you pass, you enrol with a State Bar Council. To practise in court you also need to pass the All India Bar Examination. Check the BCI notice for the current rules.

The real route to the bench

Many guides say you need seven to ten years of practice before a judicial exam. That is not right for entry-level posts. On 20 May 2025 the Supreme Court ruled that a candidate for Civil Judge (Junior Division) needs three years of practice as an advocate. For a District Judge, the Constitution asks for seven years as an advocate. Rules differ by state, so read your High Court’s notice.

How service helps

A service record is not a legal qualification. Still, it shows discipline and steady work, which law demands. It can help you in security, defence and government-linked legal work. Talk about it in interviews, but do not expect it to replace skill.

A worked path to LLB after Agniveer

Say Meena leaves service at 22 with a Class 12 pass. She earns a three-year degree through distance study while she works. Then she sits an entrance test and joins a three-year LLB. She finishes law at about 28. For LLB after Agniveer, that is a normal timeline. The route is slower than the five-year course, but it lets her earn while she studies the first degree.

Money and time for LLB after Agniveer

  • Total time is six years from Class 12: three for the first degree and three for law.
  • Government law colleges often charge less than private ones.
  • Ask each college for a written fee list and hostel cost.
  • Plan for books, travel and exam fees as well.

If your goal is a government legal post, check the post’s own rules too. Some need a fixed number of years in practice. Others ask only for the degree.

Who the LLB suits

LLB after Agniveer suits people who enjoy reading, argument and detail. It does not suit someone who wants quick pay. Court practice can pay little in the first years. Think about how you will meet living costs while you build a practice.

Steps to follow

  1. Finish your first degree with at least the required marks.
  2. Check that the law college is on the BCI’s list of approved colleges.
  3. Find out which entrance test the university uses.
  4. Apply and keep your marksheets ready.
  5. After the degree, enrol with your State Bar Council and plan for the bar exam.

For a postgraduate law degree later, check the current CLAT PG rules on the Consortium of National Law Universities website.
