It is the day your Seva Nidhi lands in your account. The amount looks big. A friend says, “Put it all in a shop.” Another says, “Never touch it.” Both can be wrong. A business after Agniveer can work well, but only if you plan the money, the paperwork and your safety net before you spend a rupee. This guide gives you the steps in order.
Why a business after Agniveer can work
You have habits that small businesses need. You turn up early, you finish what you start, and you can lead a small team. You also have a lump sum at an age when most people have no savings. These are real strengths. The weak spot is usually business experience, not money. So treat your first year as a learning year and keep your risk small.
Step 1: Know what you actually have
The official Agnipath terms quote a Seva Nidhi of about Rs. 11.71 lakh. It is made of your own 30 percent contributions, an equal amount from the government and interest. The Seva Nidhi is exempt from income tax. Each Agniveer also gets two payment options. One is aimed at loans for self-employment through a bank guarantee. The other helps with immediate costs after exit. Ask your unit how to choose, and read the exact wording before you sign.
Step 2: Decide what you are funding
Write down the real cost of your idea. Add equipment, first stock, rent, licence fees and three to six months of living costs. Many people forget the last item. A business after Agniveer will not pay you a salary in the first few months, so you need cash to live on while it grows.
A good test is this: if sales stay at zero for 90 days, can you still pay your bills? If not, start smaller.
Step 3: Understand the Mudra loan limits
Mudra loans are collateral-free business loans under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. The MUDRA website and a bank listing give these slabs.
| Category | Loan amount |
| Shishu | Up to Rs. 50,000 |
| Kishore | Above Rs. 50,000, up to Rs. 5 lakh |
| Tarun | Above Rs. 5 lakh, up to Rs. 10 lakh |
| Tarun Plus | Above Rs. 10 lakh, up to Rs. 20 lakh, only for people who repaid an earlier Tarun loan |
Here is a point the older version of this article got wrong. Your Seva Nidhi of about Rs. 11.71 lakh is more than the top of the Tarun slab, which is Rs. 10 lakh. So a first Mudra loan cannot be bigger than Rs. 10 lakh. Tarun Plus opens only after you repay a Tarun loan. Banks also decide each case, so a slab is a limit and not a promise.
Step 4: Choose a business structure
Pick the simplest form that fits your plan. A business after Agniveer can start as a sole proprietorship and change later.
- Sole proprietorship: the simplest. You and the business are one person in law.
- One Person Company: a company with a single owner and limited liability.
- Partnership or LLP: for two or more people who share work and profit.
If you plan to work with a friend, write down the split of money, work and exit rules at the start. Most partnership fights begin with an unwritten promise.
Step 5: Register on Udyam
Udyam registration is the government’s registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. The Udyam portal says registration is free, paperless and based on self-declaration, and it needs an Aadhaar number. No agent has to be paid. Any site that asks for a fee is not the government site. A Udyam certificate helps when you apply to banks for MSME loans.
Step 6: Check licences for your business after Agniveer
Some businesses need a licence before you open. A security agency needs a licence under PSARA, covered in our PSARA license guide. A truck or taxi service needs drivers with the right license, and our guide to the commercial driving license explains that. A food shop needs food safety registration, and many shops need a local trade permit. Ask your local municipal office what your business needs.
Step 7: Protect your safety net before you open
Keep an emergency fund apart from the business money. Mixing the two is a common early mistake, because one bad month can then empty both. Our guide on the emergency fund explains how much to keep. For a harder look at the choice, read Seva Nidhi versus starting a business.
Mistakes to avoid in a business after Agniveer
- Putting the whole Seva Nidhi into stock or equipment on day one.
- Choosing a trade only because a friend did well in it.
- Taking a loan before you know your monthly sales.
- Skipping records. Write down every sale and every cost, even in a notebook.
- Forgetting that wages, rent and electricity are due even in a slow month.
- Paying an agent for a free government registration.
A simple first-year plan for a business after Agniveer
- Month 1: test your idea on a small scale, with almost no spending.
- Month 2: write the cost list and talk to two banks.
- Month 3: register on Udyam and get any licence.
- Months 4 to 6: open, record every sale, and watch cash weekly.
- Month 12: review the numbers and decide whether to grow, hold or stop.
