Not everyone wants three more years of college. Maybe you want a trade, a certificate and a job soon. If so, diploma courses for ex-Agniveers at an ITI or a polytechnic may fit. This guide shows what the government lists, who can join, and how to pick.

How big is the ITI system today?

The Directorate General of Training (DGT) runs the Craftsmen Training Scheme. A DGT page listing every trade was updated in 2026. The Craftsmen Training Scheme page says 14,643 ITIs offer training under it. Of these, 3,331 are government ITIs and 11,312 are private. They teach 169 NSQF-compliant trades.

Older articles, including an earlier version of this one, quoted 126 trades. That figure is out of date. Some websites also give other numbers, so use the DGT list as your guide.

Think of Ravi, a made-up example. He served four years as a driver and wants a trade certificate. He checks the list and finds Driver cum Mechanic (LMV) at six months and Mechanic Motor Vehicle at two years. He picks the longer one because he wants workshop skills, not only driving. Choosing the right length for your goal is half the battle with diploma courses for ex-Agniveers, and it is why we list diploma courses for ex-Agniveers by length above.

Course length and entry rules for diploma courses for ex-Agniveers

DGT’s trade list shows three lengths: 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. Most engineering trades with a technical base run for two years. Many non-engineering trades run for one year. The usual entry rule is a Class 10 pass. For some trades, a Class 8 pass is enough. Some technical trades ask for Class 10 with Science and Mathematics.

Trade (examples from DGT list)LengthEntry rule
Electrician2 yearsClass 10 with Science and Maths
Fitter2 yearsClass 10 with Science and Maths
Mechanic Motor Vehicle2 yearsClass 10 with Science and Maths
Welder1 yearClass 8 pass
Driver cum Mechanic (LMV)6 monthsClass 8 pass
Fireman6 monthsClass 10 pass
Fire Technology and Industrial Safety Management1 yearClass 10 pass

Entry rules can change by trade and session. Open the DGT list of trades before you plan.

Which trades match your service skills?

  • Driving and vehicles: Driver cum Mechanic (LMV) and Mechanic Motor Vehicle.
  • Safety and rescue: Fireman, and Fire Technology and Industrial Safety Management.
  • Electrical and electronic work: Electrician and Electronics Mechanic.
  • Workshop trades: Fitter, Machinist, Turner and Welder.
  • Office and computer work: trades such as COPA and Data Entry Operator.

If you want a deeper look at one of these, read the electrician and electrical maintenance course guide.

How admission works for diploma courses for ex-Agniveers

DGT says training policy, standards and exams are central responsibilities. But day-to-day running and admission rest with each state or union territory. So admission rules, dates and counselling differ by state. Watch your state’s ITI admission portal and your district notices.

  1. Check which trades your nearest ITIs offer.
  2. Match the trade to your Class 8 or Class 10 marks and subjects.
  3. Register on your state’s ITI admission portal when it opens.
  4. Keep your marksheet, ID and service papers ready for counselling.
  5. Confirm that the ITI is affiliated with DGT before you pay any fee.

What about polytechnic diplomas?

A polytechnic diploma in engineering is usually a three-year course taken after Class 10. It goes deeper than an ITI trade. It can also open the way to a degree through lateral entry, which we explain in our guide on diploma to degree lateral entry. Polytechnic admission usually runs through a separate state process. Some states may let ITI pass-outs join a diploma in year two. That depends on your state board, so ask before you count on it.

Can ITI help with a degree later?

Two-year engineering trades in the DGT list sit at NSQF level 4. UGC’s B.Voc rules give some benefits to learners who hold an NSQF level 4 certificate in the same sector. But each college decides what it accepts. Read our guide to the Bachelor of Vocation pathway and ask in writing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Joining an institute that is not affiliated with DGT or a state board.
  • Paying an agent for a seat. Merit and counselling decide admission.
  • Picking a trade only because friends chose it.
  • Ignoring the entry subjects. A trade that needs Science and Maths will reject you without them.
  • Skipping apprenticeship. It adds on-the-job experience after training.

Pay and jobs: stay realistic

We removed older salary ranges because we could not match them to an official source. Pay after an ITI course depends on the trade, the city and the employer. Read the pay in real job posts, and look at apprenticeship notices too. Employers in workshops, fire services, power firms and vehicle service centres often list ITI trades in their posts. Diploma courses for ex-Agniveers work best when you pair them with a clear job target. Free training may also be available through PMKVY and other skill schemes.

Frequently Asked Questions
