Source: Madhya Pradesh Cabinet decision, 29 September 2026

Bhopal, September 29, 2026: The Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation is now approved: the Cabinet has cleared a 20 per cent horizontal reservation for Agniveers in uniformed services of the state. The decision was taken on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. It is the highest share in the current round of state announcements, and it matches the 20 per cent already given in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.

Posts covered by the Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation

The Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation applies to the following uniformed posts:

  • Police Constable (General Duty)
  • Special Armed Force (SAF)
  • Jail Guard
  • Forest Guard
  • Excise Constable

The Cabinet decision places Agniveers alongside two groups that already had reservations in these posts, Home Guard personnel and ex-servicemen. The existing provisions for those two groups continue.

Post-wise reservation table

SAF10%5%20%35%
Jail Guard15%5%20%40%
Forest Guard15%5%20%40%
Excise Constable10%5%20%35%

The last column is simply the arithmetic sum of the three horizontal quotas for each post. It shows that a large share of vacancies in these posts is now reserved for people with a uniformed background. The Excise Constable posts mentioned in the decision fall under the Commercial Tax Department.

What horizontal reservation means

A horizontal reservation cuts across all the other categories. If a post has 100 vacancies and 20 are earmarked for Agniveers, those 20 are filled by qualified Agniveers from the General, SC, ST and OBC categories in line with each category’s share. The Agniveer does not lose the vertical reservation that he or she may otherwise be entitled to. This is the same method that most states use for ex-servicemen and women.

Why the Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation is 20 per cent

The state government has not published a long explanation, but the decision follows an earlier announcement by Chief Minister Yadav in 2024 that Madhya Pradesh would give reservation to Agniveers in the police and armed forces. Other states have used the same logic. About 75 per cent of each Agniveer batch will leave the armed forces after four years, and state uniformed services are the closest match for their training. A higher quota gives them a better chance in a crowded recruitment market.

The Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation also came on the same day as Maharashtra’s Cabinet approval of a 10 per cent quota. Taken together, the two states show the range of choices available: Madhya Pradesh doubled the share offered by Maharashtra, though Maharashtra has added concessions such as exemption from a written examination.

What is not yet known about the Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation

The reports reviewed do not give details on age relaxation, exemption from physical or written tests, or the date when the first recruitment advertisement will appear. These usually come through amendments to the recruitment rules of each department or a government order. Agniveers should not assume that benefits such as a test exemption apply until the notification says so.

Another question is how the first recruitment drive will actually count the Agniveer quota. Departments will need to decide whether vacancies are fixed before the exam, how the Agniveer merit list will be prepared and how unfilled posts will be handled. These are the points where candidates often face confusion, and they will become clear only when the rules are published.

Other decisions at the same Cabinet meeting

The Cabinet meeting also took other decisions, including a financial package of about Rs 24,500 crore. These are separate from the Agniveer reservation, and the quota should be read only through the specific order that is issued for uniformed services.

Reading the table carefully

The Agniveer share is fixed at 20 per cent for all five posts, while the Home Guard share changes from post to post. It is also four times the 5 per cent given to ex-servicemen. As an illustration, if a department advertises 1,000 constable vacancies, 200 would be earmarked for Agniveers, 100 for Home Guard personnel and 50 for ex-servicemen, subject to the final rules. This is only an example to explain the arithmetic, and the actual numbers will depend on each recruitment.

Another point is that all these quotas are drawn from the same set of vacancies. A candidate who is both a Home Guard member and an ex-Agniveer would normally have to choose one claim. How the rules treat such cases will be known only when the detailed order is published.

What Agniveers from Madhya Pradesh should do now

Agniveers from the state should keep their discharge certificate, educational documents and proof of residence ready. They should follow the official sites of the Madhya Pradesh Police, the Home Guard and Prisons departments, the Forest Department and the Commercial Tax Department for new advertisements. Preparation for physical tests should continue, because the reports do not confirm any exemption. Finally, avoid anyone who offers a seat in return for money. Recruitment will be done only through official notifications.

With the first batches leaving between now and early 2027, the Madhya Pradesh Agniveer reservation is one of the strongest state quotas in the country. The real value of the 20 per cent will be seen when departments publish their vacancies.
