Guwahati, October 4, 2026: The Assam Agniveer reservation is now official: the Assam Cabinet has approved a 12 per cent quota for Agniveers in constable-level and equivalent posts across the state’s uniformed services. The decision was taken on Sunday, 4 October 2026, at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. With this, Assam joins the group of states that have moved in the last few days to prepare job pathways for young soldiers who are about to complete four years of service under the Agnipath scheme.
What the Assam Agniveer reservation covers
According to the Cabinet release as reported by news agencies, 12 per cent of constable and equivalent posts will be set aside for permanent residents of Assam who are serving, or have served, under the Agnipath scheme. The wording is important. It covers Agniveers who are still in service as well as those who have completed their engagement, as long as they are permanent residents of the state.
The Assam Agniveer reservation will apply in the following services:
- Assam Police
- Commando Battalions
- Jail Department
- Fire Services
- State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)
- Forest Guards
- Excise Department
These are all posts that value discipline, physical fitness and the ability to work under pressure, which is exactly what an Agniveer is trained for during four years in the Army, Navy or Air Force. The quota is limited to constable-level and equivalent posts. It does not apply to officer-level recruitment.
Why the timing matters
The first Agniveer batches, enrolled after the scheme was introduced in June 2022, are now close to the end of their four-year engagement. Reports place the completion window for the Navy and Air Force in October and November 2026, with the first large Army batches following in December 2026 and January 2027. A state that announces its quota before these batches are released gives young soldiers something concrete to plan around.
Under the scheme, up to 25 per cent of each batch can be re-enrolled in the regular cadre on merit and organisational need. The rest leave with a tax-free Seva Nidhi package of about Rs 11.71 lakh, including interest, but without a pension or gratuity. For most Agniveers, who will be in their early twenties when they leave, the real question is not the lump sum but the next job. State uniformed services are among the most natural destinations, which is why the Assam Agniveer reservation is being watched so closely.
How the state quota sits beside the central quota
At the Centre, the Ministry of Home Affairs has already created an Ex-Agniveer category with 50 per cent reservation in Constable (General Duty) posts in the Central Armed Police Forces and Rifleman posts in the Assam Rifles. The same reports mention age relaxation and exemption from the Physical Standard Test, the Physical Efficiency Test and the written examination for the central quota. For an Agniveer from Assam, this means two separate doors: one into the central forces and one into the state’s own services.
| Level | Where the quota applies | Reservation | Posts |
| Centre (Ministry of Home Affairs) | CAPFs and Assam Rifles | 50% | Constable (GD) and Rifleman |
| Assam (state Cabinet) | Police, Commando Battalions, Jail, Fire, SDRF, Forest, Excise | 12% | Constable and equivalent |
The Assam Agniveer reservation is lower in percentage than the central quota, but the two are not competing with each other. An Agniveer can prepare for both and apply wherever a notification is open and the conditions are met.
What the state services gain
Supporters of such quotas point out that the departments also benefit. An Agniveer comes with discipline, basic weapon handling, teamwork and experience of difficult conditions. In services such as the SDRF and Fire Services, where emergency response is the daily job, this background can shorten the time needed to make a recruit ready for duty. Assam has not published a detailed note on this, but the same argument has been made by ex-servicemen groups in other states.
What is still not clear
The reports reviewed do not say whether Assam’s 12 per cent is a horizontal reservation that cuts across the General, SC, ST and OBC categories, how much age relaxation will be given, or whether ex-Agniveers will be exempt from the physical or written tests. These details normally come in the recruitment rules or the official notification that follows a Cabinet decision.
The experience of Chhattisgarh shows why this matters. Its Cabinet approved a 10 per cent quota in July 2026 and then had to clear separate recruitment rules on 30 September 2026 before departments could actually apply the quota. The Assam Agniveer reservation is only the first step, and candidates should wait for the rules before assuming any particular benefit.
What Agniveers from Assam should do now
Serving Agniveers and those about to be released can start with simple preparation. Keep the discharge or service certificate safe once it is issued, along with educational certificates and proof of permanent residence in Assam. Follow the official recruitment websites of the Assam Police and the other departments rather than relying on social media posts. Be careful about anyone who asks for money to reserve a post. Reservation is given only through official recruitment.
A pattern across states

The Assam Agniveer reservation is the fourth state quota to be announced or finalised in about a week. Madhya Pradesh approved 20 per cent and Maharashtra 10 per cent on 29 September, Chhattisgarh cleared its recruitment rules on 30 September, and Assam followed on 4 October with 12 per cent. The percentages differ because each state decides on its own, and there is no single national rule for state jobs. That makes it important for every Agniveer to check the exact terms
offered by his or her home state.
