Suppose you are an ex-Agniveer from Kolkata, Siliguri or the Sundarbans. You hear two pieces of news in one week. A state quota, and a brand-new force. Which one should you chase first? The West Bengal Agniveer reservation and the Arjun Bahini force are different things, and each helps in its own way. Here is what the West Bengal Agniveer reservation offers, and what is still unclear.
The West Bengal Agniveer reservation: 20%
On Sunday, 23 August 2026, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a 20% reservation for Agniveers. He spoke at a central government event in Garden Reach, Kolkata. Reports say the quota covers recruitment in four departments:
- Police
- Fire and Emergency Services
- Forest Department
- Disaster Management Department (civil defence)
The All India Radio report confirms the 20% figure and the four departments.
There is one catch. We found no government order or recruitment rule yet. A report on the announcement said official notices on how the quota will work are still awaited. That includes whether it is horizontal, which posts it covers, and any age relaxation or test exemption. So treat the West Bengal Agniveer reservation as announced, not yet in force.
A budget promise of 10%
The state’s 2026 budget had earlier talked about 10% for Agniveers wherever applicable, as part of a plan to fill one lakh government vacancies. The August announcement of 20% for four departments is higher. If the two figures ever clash in a notice, follow the notice.
Arjun Bahini: a new force
Arjun Bahini, also written Arjun Vahini, is a new 200-member disaster response force. The Chief Minister launched it on 1 September 2026. He said it is similar to the National Disaster Response Force. The state formed it after a warehouse collapse at Taratala, Kolkata, in June 2026.
| Detail | What was announced |
| Strength | 200 personnel |
| Source of first batch | Army personnel under 40, chosen through the State Sainik Board, as the Chief Minister said at launch |
| Kolkata | 100 personnel |
| Sundarbans and nearby South 24 Parganas | 50 personnel |
| Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills | 50 personnel in total |
| Pay | Rs. 25,000 a month for each member; Rs. 40,000 for the commander, called Veer Nayak |
| Yearly increase | About 3% |
| Insurance | Rs. 10 lakh on death; Rs. 5 lakh on disability or injury |
The pay and insurance figures come from the All India Radio report on the launch. Reports differ slightly on who gets the Rs. 10 lakh cover. One says death, while another says serious injury or death. Check the final order.
Is Arjun Bahini open to Agniveers now?
Not yet, as far as the West Bengal Agniveer reservation and the force go. The Chief Minister said the force will be formed mainly from retired soldiers and Agniveers. At launch the 200 members were Army personnel under 40 picked through the State Sainik Board, as the Chief Minister said. One government-style order circulated online calls them ex-Agniveers and splits the hill posts 25 each between Darjeeling and Kalimpong. We could not confirm which description is final, so check the official order. The state’s civil defence head said the state plans to fill the disaster workforce with Agniveers in future. For the West Bengal Agniveer reservation and Arjun Bahini alike, timing is uncertain. One report quoted the Chief Minister saying the first Agniveer batch would not be available until January.
So the practical advice is simple. Keep in touch with your district Sainik Welfare office. Watch the state government’s announcements. Be ready with your documents when a notice comes.
How the two options differ
| Point | 20% reservation | Arjun Bahini |
| What it is | A share of posts in four departments | A new, separate disaster force |
| Status | Announced, rules awaited | Launched with 200 members |
| Pay | Government pay scale of the post | Rs. 25,000 consolidated |
| Who can join now | Ex-Agniveers, once notices come | Army personnel chosen through the State Sainik Board |
The West Bengal Agniveer reservation may lead to a regular government job with a pay scale. Arjun Bahini offers a fixed monthly pay and disaster work. Why this matters for the first batch
The first Agniveer batch is due to finish around the end of 2026. States are now deciding what to offer. West Bengal chose to pair a quota with a purpose-built force. That gives ex-Agniveers two doors instead of one. It also means details may still change. For the West Bengal Agniveer reservation, the number of posts per department is not yet known. That number decides how real the quota is for you.
Ask three questions when a notice appears. How many posts are reserved? Which tests must you still pass? What is the age limit on the cut-off date? A clear answer to each question tells you whether to apply.
What to do while you wait

- Keep your discharge certificate and service record safe.

Our guide to emergency response and disaster management training can help you build those skills. A short course can also make you a stronger applicant when a notice arrives. Also remember that the West Bengal Agniveer reservation may change before it is notified, so check each notice.
Common mistakes
- Treating the West Bengal Agniveer reservation as a final rule. It is an announcement for now.
- Applying to Arjun Bahini through unofficial agents.
- Ignoring the age limit. The first batch took Army personnel under 40.
